Pontiac

>> Senin, 19 Januari 2009

Pontiac entered the market in 1926, but the beginning of the establishment of the company dated way back in 1893, when Edward M. Murphy established the Pontiac Buggy Company in Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan. At first, the company produced horse-drawn carriages. But later, Edward M. Murphy decided to create motor car with Oakland Motor Car Company in 190and withdrew carriage production. The decision paid off. As was predicted, horses were replaced with motor cars by the turn of the century.

In 1909, General Motors bought half of Oakland in an exchange of stock and later bought the whole company. Some major glitches were encountered by the company during the next two decades. The company finally recovered and in 1926, the first Pontiac, the Series 6-27 was presented to the public at the 1926 New York Auto Show. The series 6-27 rode on a 110-inch wheelbase and featured a Fisher-designed body and a six-cylinder L-head engine. Other models, the coupe and sedan, can reach the maximum speed of up to 50 mph. This was the first closed car in the market at that time.

Two years later in 1928, Pontiac launched the Series 6-28 with major model change. It has a new cross-flow radiator, a Pontiac first. It was followed by the Series 6-29 in 1929. The Series 6-30B was a 1930 model (no Series 6-30A was released) and Series 401 came a year after with six models; two four-door sedans, two coupes, a two-door sedan and a convertible. Other models came after. In 1937, Pontiac replaced the A-body with the larger B-body and introduced its first station wagon. They also moved to all-steel body construction.

Surprisingly, most of Pontiac models were a hit despite several company setbacks. The Series 6-27 produced 127,883 units, the 6-28, sold nearly 184,000 in its debut year; Pontiac built its 500,000th car in 1929, 1937 model year sold 217,001 cars in 1940. These sales reflected the present antique Pontiac vehicles and antique Pontiac parts that are still around despite decades passed. The presence of antique Pontiac vehicles and antique Pontiac parts today clearly showed the amazing achievement of the company that competed against the toughest brands in its time. And with antique Pontiac parts, these vehicles will continue to run in spite of the faster and better car today.

Plymouth

The entry of Plymouth in the auto industry came together with Dodge Brothers Corporation, De Soto Motor Corporation and the Chrysler Sales Corporation, all under Chrysler Corporation in the 30's. But due to the great American depression experienced by the country in the 20's, Plymouth's entry was not a great timing. The first Plymouth car, the Model U was totally radical in its time. It rode on a new frame with a completely revised engine, and an all steel body and a new wide band radiator.

The production of the Model 30U began three short days following the shut down of production of the Model U on April 5, 1930. It lasted 14 months in the production run, one of the longest in Plymouth's history. And the end of 30U's production, the company had made more than 75,510 cars. The Business Coupe, a two door sedan and a business roadster without rumble seat and the Commercial Sedan, a two door sedan with a door fitted into the rear of the body soon followed the earlier model.

In April 1934, Plymouth's first official station wagon was out in the market. By 1937 Plymouth had decided to bring back the commercial car market in better design, announcing a complete line of trucks in addition to the passenger car line. This line of trucks, mounted on Dodge like truck chassis and called the PT50, offered a pickup, a cab and chassis pickup, a sedan delivery--and the station wagon body on the PT50 Chassis. Over the next few years, Plymouth's design changed. Some of the models are changed, reshaped, and resized.

By 1940, Plymouth finally followed the reformation of other Chrysler vehicle. The new look of Plymouth car was very evident in their convertible sedan that was introduced in 1939. Its 117" wheelbase was lower, wider, and longer than any Plymouth in past history. The 1939 cars were Roadking P9 series in a two door or four-door sedan, as well as a two-passenger coupe. The Deluxe P10 series offered a club coupe, a two-passenger business coupe, a convertible coupe, two-door and four-door sedans, a 7-passenger sedan, a limousine, and a station wagon. The revived Commercial Car line included a pickup (express) and a cab and chassis on the truck chassis, as well as a Utility Sedan and a panel (sedan) delivery on the Roadking chassis.

Olds Mobile

In 1897 Ransom Eli Olds, a manufacturer of stationary gasoline engines, and Frank Clark, the son of a small carriage shop operator founded the Olds Motor Company after they had successfully created a self-contained gasoline-powered carriage. It was a typical one-cylinder, chain-driven vehicle and not too distinguished looking. But in 1900 R.E. Olds added a feature that made his car unforgettable. It was a curved dashboard. A year later, Olds combined the Curved Dash self-contained gasoline-powered carriage. The company was in full swing and created the first assembly line. They became the first mass producer of gasoline cars.

The unique Oldsmobile was followed in 1906, by the Model S, the first four-cylinder Oldsmobile with two versions; the Gentlemen's Roadster and the Palace Touring. In 1910, the now-famous Limited was unveiled. With truly huge machines, the Limited were build on 130-inch wheelbase chassis and 42-inch tires. By 1911, the limited housed 707-cid six-cylinder engine at 60 hp. By 1915, a brand new Model 42 with four-cylinder Roadster hit the road. It was followed by Model 37 in 1918. These antique vehicles are becoming more popular with closed cabin feature.

Oldsmobile was unstoppable on the 20s. This era produced several amazing Oldsmobile: Model 46 in '21, Model 47 and coupe in '22. By 1926, the Oldsmobile introduced the chrome plated trim, an important styling asset that was first used on the radiator shell. 1928 gave a totally new Oldsmobile, the F-28. This was powered by a 55 hp engine from 1928 cid. The F-28 expanded to 14 models, spread among 7 basic body styles and standard, Deluxe and Sport trim. By 1934, the convertible was available only in the L-34 (eight- cylinder) series and sold fewer than 1,000 units.

Lower profiles gave the 34s an even more streamlined look, but the real news that year came in the form of "Knee Action" independent front suspension and hydraulic-rather than mechanical-brakes. The automobile has immensely changed the lives of every human being and the Oldsmobile was one that contributed to that change. The antique Oldsmobile are now replaced by modern styles that are a far cry from the small elegant curved-dash classic. But the antique Oldsmobile will continue to run with the existing antique Oldsmobile parts still promise to bring out the image of the original antique Oldsmobile that once shaped the way people move and contributed to a faster, better, and smaller world.

Dodge

For over a century, Dodge has been producing top quality trucks that have defined the way people move. Founded by the Dodge brothers John Francis Dodge and Horace Elgin Dodge that started 1901 when they opened a machine shop in Detroit, making stove parts and, later, auto parts. The brothers' first involvement in auto industry was in 1902, when Henry Ford who was looking for help in financing his own automobile company approached them. At first, they supply the mechanical parts of the initial 500,000 Ford Model T cars. Because of this, they became well known and highly respected in the automotive industry because of the work they had done for Ford, Oldsmobile, and other leading auto manufacturers.

In 1910 Dodge brothers established their own automobile company in Hamtramck, Michigan. In 1913, they began producing their own automobiles, and the first Dodge automobile appeared on November 14, 1914 with their name on it as a 1915 model. Dodge started well. Their first truck sold well, surpassing Ford's Model T. After the First World War, the 1918 model, the military ambulance was converted to the famous Dodge Brothers half-ton Screenside Commercial Car was released. The Screenside was built on a 114-inch wheelbase automobile chassis with a maximum payload of 1,000 lbs. (half-ton) and used the auto's 212 cubic inch, 35 horsepower, four cylinder engine in three speed transmission. Approximately six months after launching the Screenside the half-ton was added to the commercial car line. These two models were the only trucks the original Dodge Brothers Company built between 1918 and 1928. In 1923 they were upgraded to a 3/4-ton payload rating (1,500 lbs.) and their wheelbases were lengthened to 116-inches in 1924.

By 1920, the year in which both brothers died, Dodge was one of the industry's largest companies. The Dodge concern was purchased by Chrysler Corporation in 1928 and remains a division of Chrysler. From that moment on, the company continued to make several types of vehicle. In 1929, the largest Dodge truck with big, powerful three-ton which featured a 241 cubic inch, 78 horsepower six cylinder with a heavy duty 4-speed transmission and 4-wheel hydraulic brakes was released. It was followed by the 1933 Dodge Commercials, Commercial Sedan, Commercial Express (pickup), and the Commercial Panel. Together with the other antique vehicle, these models became prominent during their time. The Commercial series sold very well in spite of the depression that hit America in that period.

Today, these models are replaced by newer, faster, and better trucks. But the legacy lives on. These antique Dodge vehicles become one of the priceless possessions a antique car enthusiast could have. Chrysler

Although many still used horse carriages, motor cars have established themselves as a main transportation machine at the turn of the 20th century. The two prominent companies and were considered as pioneers in the automotive world were the General Motors Corporation and the Ford Motor Company that indeed achieve the remarkable stature by accumulating a stable of fine cars. But in the midst of these two giants, one person by the name of Walter P. Chrysler had decided to build a company that will challenge Ford and General Motors.

In January 1924, Chrysler unveiled its first car, to the public during the National Auto Show in New York City, the Chrysler Six that later got off to a good start with production of 32,000 units in the first year alone. Two years later, when the Chrysler Corporation was already established, the first luxury antique model was released, the Imperial "80" along with the Chrysler "50", the "60" and the "70." The Sedan sold poorly that forced the company to redesign the body.

The following year unveiled another set of Chrysler vehicles. In 1936, Chrysler released the Airstream Convertible Sedan. Five year later Chrysler Town & Country Station Wagon was out in the market. War brought great strain in the company, but after the war, they concentrated on engineering improvements, experimenting with torsion bar suspension, hemispherical combustion chambers, and efficient use of horsepower. The result was the 1947, Chrysler Town & Country Sedan, Chrysler Windsor - Eight Passenger, Chrysler Windsor Convertible, and the Chrysler Town and Country Convertible Woody.

Chevy

The Chevrolet Motor Company was incorporated in November of 1911 by William Durant, an American buggy manufacturer, and Louis Chevrolet, a well known race car driver. A year later they released their first ever car that was called the 'Cylinder Six.' But Chevy's first truck, the Model 490 Light Delivery came later in 1918, the same year that the Chevrolet Motor Company became part of General Motors. The half-ton rated 490 Light Delivery was a chassis cowl only based on the 490 auto. A chassis cowl included the chassis with engine, transmission and the front sheet metal which comprised the hood, front fenders, grille and headlights. Its instrument panel, steering wheel, foot pedals and shift lever were exactly the same as the cars.

The 490 was powered by a four cylinder overhead valve engine displacing 171 cubic inches with only 102 inches wheelbase and was rated for a maximum payload of 1,000 pounds. This engine which developed 21.7 SAE horsepower lasted through the 1928 model year. Its transmission was the same three-speed as used in the auto. The 490 were equipped with 30x3 1/2 balloon tires front and rear with a price tag of $595.

The 490 Light Delivery and one-ton Model T remained in production through the 1922 model year. A 3/4 ton chassis cowl Model G was added in 1921 but only lasted the following year. The Light Delivery chassis and the one-ton trucks were renamed the Superior Series in 1922 (the same as Chevrolet Cars). The name lasted through the 1927 model year. The Series name was changed to Capitol for both trucks in 1927 which lasted through 1928. During the following years, Chevy released different models. In 1931, the Independence series was released. 1932 marked the arrival of the Confederate Series. Meanwhile, the 1934 Chevrolet Series DB Master Commercial truck line was completely revised. The 1934 trucks became the 1935's Series EB Master Commercial. Over the years, Chevy continued to develop better, faster, and stronger engines to compensate the body of their vehicles. In 1937 came the Sedan Delivery and the Coupe Pickup.

With rich history and evolution, Chevy's first vehicles have made a mark in the industry. Antique Chevy cars may not be the picture of the present day to day driving, but these vehicles truly deserve the highest recognition. Antique Chevy cars are revived by Antique Chevy parts that are still available, although rare. With antique Chevy parts, the antique Chevy lives on.

Cadillac

When William Murphy and Lemuel W. Bowen called in Henry Martyn Leland as a consultant in August of 1902, the Olds Motor Works, makers of the Oldsmobile, never had a clue that the engine that they rejected from Leland will fall into the hands of the company that will later bear the name Cadillac Automobile Company- named after Le Sieur Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, the French explorer who had discovered Detroit in early Eighteenth Century. Leland was born in Vermont and moved to Detroit to work with wealthy lumberman Robert C. Faulconer and tool designer Charles H. Norton. Buick

Between the year 1899 and 1900, David Dunbar Buick, a Detroit plumbing executive and inventor who began building and selling gasoline engines late in the 19th century, and his engineer Walter L. Marr, produced the first experimental Buick automobile. That very year, Buiick created Buick Auto-Vim and Power Co. in the Boydell Building, which still proudly stands at Beaubien and Lafayette, six blocks from Renaissance Center. He created Buick Manufacturing Co. in 1901 or 1902. However his first corporation was Buick Motor Co., a Detroit firm he incorporated on May 19, 1903.

Within the short four years, in 1908, Billy Durrant organized Buick into such a success to become the No. 1 producer of automobiles in 1908, surpassing the combined production of Ford and

Cadillac, its closest competitors. Several names were also contributed to the success of the company like Charles W. Nash, a founder of what later became American Motors; Walter P. Chrysler, founder of Chrysler Corp. and Harlow H. Curtice, a GM president and chief executive after the war. Louis Chevrolet, co-founder with Durant of the Chevrolet automobile, had earlier achieved fame as a Buick race team driver.

Buick sold thousands of units over the next few years, especially after the war when first torque converter automatic transmission, Dynaflow, was introduced on the 1948 Roadmaster; a high-compression V-8 was introduced in 1953. The sales grew from 550,000 in 1950, to 745,000 in 1955. Other famous name models define the road during the 60's like Lesabre, Invicta, Wildcat, Electra 225, Centurion, and Apollo. Buick sales continued to rise through the 1960s and hit a record 821,165 in the 1973 model year. But the bottom fell out again with the oil embargo late that year, and sales totaled fewer than 500,000 in both 1974 and '75. Over the next few years, Buick rebounded and marked rapid sales increase up to the present.

The success of Buick is truly remarkable. That is why many car enthusiasts still appreciate the beauty of antique Buick cars. And to support the demand of antique collectors and restorers, antique Buick parts such as clutch, engine, cooling, grills, oiling, electrical, lamps, carburetion, exhaust, fuel, brakes, transmission, propeller shaft, rear axle, wheels, front suspension, steering, bumpers, frame, shocks, springs, front fenders, hood, running boards, air conditioner, firewall, heater, radio, antenna, cowl, dash, doors, glass, weatherstrip, wiper, dome lenses, door sills, rear 1/4 glass, seats, deck lid, rear sheet metal, rocker panels, convertible tops & parts, door panels, headlining, misc. interior, carpet, floor mats, hardware section (moulding clips, etc.), buick stuff license plates, key chains, etc are still much available. In this way, the legacy and heritage of the antique Buick car remains alive.
